Getting around La Paz can feel confusing at first.<\/p>

Unlike cities where every bus appears in an app and stops at a clearly marked station, much of La Paz still moves through minibuses, micros and trufis with fixed routes written on their windshields<\/strong>.<\/p>

Once you understand the system, it becomes much easier.<\/p>

This guide explains what each vehicle is, how to find the right one, what to say, how to pay and \u2014 most importantly \u2014 how to know when to get off.<\/p>

The 20-second answer<\/h2>

Look at the words on the windshield.<\/p>

Ask:<\/p>

Does it go to ___?<\/em><\/p>

If the answer is yes, get in and keep small Boliviano notes or coins ready.<\/p>

Before reaching your destination, say:<\/p>

\u201c\u00a1Aqu\u00ed, por favor!\u201d<\/strong>
Here, please!<\/em><\/p>

or:<\/p>

\u201c\u00a1Voy a bajar!\u201d<\/strong>
I\u2019m getting off!<\/em><\/p>

That is basically the system.<\/p>

Now let\u2019s make sure you know what you’re getting into.<\/p>

First: What\u2019s the Difference?<\/h1>

\"\ud83d\ude90\" Minibus<\/h2>

A minibus<\/strong> is a small van carrying several passengers along a fixed route.<\/p>

They are everywhere in La Paz and are one of the most commonly used forms of public transport.<\/p>

You will usually find a sign in the windshield showing important neighbourhoods, streets or destinations along the route.<\/p>

\"\ud83d\ude8c\" Micro<\/h2>

A micro<\/strong> is a small or medium-sized city bus.<\/p>

They usually follow established routes and tend to be cheaper than minibuses.<\/p>

Some are older, colourful buses that are very easy to recognise once you’ve seen one.<\/p>

\"\ud83d\ude95\" Trufi<\/h2>

A trufi<\/strong> is basically a shared taxi that follows a fixed route<\/strong>.<\/p>

The word comes from taxi de ruta fija<\/em>.<\/p>

Unlike a normal taxi, you don’t hire the whole car. Other passengers get in and out along the route.<\/p>

Again, the most important information is normally displayed in the windshield.<\/p>

The municipal government itself defines TRUFI as a taxi de ruta fija<\/em>.<\/p>

The Most Important Skill: Read the Windshield<\/h1>

Forget about trying to memorise dozens of route numbers.<\/p>

In La Paz, the words on the windshield are often more useful than the number<\/strong>.<\/p>

You might see something like:<\/p>

MALLASA \u2013 CALACOTO \u2013 OBRAJES<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>

Those words indicate important places along the vehicle’s route.<\/p>

They don’t necessarily mean that every word is the final stop.<\/p>

What should you do?<\/h3>

Before getting in, simply ask:<\/p>

\u00bfVa a Mallasa?<\/strong>
Does it go to Mallasa?<\/p><\/blockquote>

Or:<\/p>

\u00bfPasa por Plaza San Francisco?<\/strong>
Does it pass San Francisco Square?<\/p><\/blockquote>

If you’re carrying Google Maps on your phone, you can also show the driver the destination.<\/p>

If you learn only one sentence for public transport in La Paz, make it:<\/p>

It will save you a lot of confusion.<\/p>

How Do I Find the Stop?<\/h1>

This is where La Paz works differently from many European or North American cities.<\/p>

For much of the traditional transport system, you should not expect a formal bus stop with a timetable and sign<\/strong>.<\/p>

Minibuses, micros and trufis commonly stop along their routes to pick up and drop off passengers rather than operating exclusively through fixed formal stops.<\/p>

Stand on the side of the road where traffic is travelling in your direction.<\/p>

Watch the approaching vehicles.<\/p>

When you see the correct destination on the windshield:<\/p>

raise your hand.<\/strong><\/p>

The driver will usually pull over when possible.<\/p>

Getting In<\/h1>

For a minibus or micro, enter and take any available seat.<\/p>

For a trufi, get in as you would a shared taxi.<\/p>

Don’t be surprised if the vehicle is small.<\/p>

And if you have a large backpack, keep it close to you and avoid blocking the door or aisle.<\/p>

One useful thing to remember:<\/p>

people may need to get out so another passenger can leave the back seats.<\/strong><\/p>

If everyone suddenly starts moving, you probably haven’t arrived \u2014 you’re just helping somebody else get out.<\/p>

How Much Does Public Transport Cost?<\/h1>

The municipal tariff introduced on 24 December 2025<\/strong> set the following fares in La Paz, but transport fares can change, so treat this table as a current reference rather than something that will remain valid forever.<\/p>

For this fare system, night fares begin at 9:00 PM<\/strong>.<\/p>

Some longer or special routes outside the normal urban bands may have their own price.\u00a0<\/p>

Always carry small cash<\/h3>

Coins and Bs 5, Bs 10 or Bs 20 notes are much easier than trying to pay a Bs 3 fare with a Bs 100 note.<\/p>

When Do I Pay?<\/h1>

This can vary between vehicles and routes.<\/p>

You may see passengers pay shortly after boarding, during the journey or when they are getting out.<\/p>

Don’t panic if nobody immediately asks you for money.<\/p>

Watch what other passengers do.<\/p>

If you’re unsure:<\/p>

How Do I Tell the Driver Where I\u2019m Going?<\/h1>

If you’re worried about missing your stop, tell the driver when you get in:<\/p>

Could you tell me when we reach ______, please?<\/p><\/blockquote>

For example:<\/p>

This is one of the most useful sentences a visitor can learn.<\/p>

You can also keep Google Maps open and follow your location during the journey.<\/p>

How Do I Get Off?<\/h1>

When you’re getting close, say clearly:<\/p>

or:<\/p>

\u00a1Voy a bajar!<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>

Don’t whisper it from the back of a noisy minibus.<\/p>

Say it loudly enough for the driver to hear you.<\/p>

The driver will stop where it is possible to let you out.<\/p>

Wait until the vehicle has stopped and pay attention when stepping onto the street \u2014 traffic may be very close beside you.\u00a0<\/p>

What About Normal Taxis?<\/h1>

A normal taxi is different from a trufi.<\/p>

With a taxi<\/strong>, you’re hiring the vehicle for your own destination rather than joining a fixed shared route.<\/p>

The easiest way is:<\/p>

Tell the driver where you’re going before getting inside<\/strong>.<\/p>

For example:<\/p>

La Paz has historically used zone-based radiotaxi pricing, and current real-world prices depend heavily on the origin, destination and service used.\u00a0<\/p>

Taxi or trufi?<\/h3>

This is an important distinction:<\/p>

Trufi:<\/strong> shared + fixed route + price per passenger.<\/p>

Don\u2019t Make These Mistakes<\/h1>

Don’t get into a vehicle simply because you recognise one<\/strong> word on the windshield. Ask first.<\/p>

Don’t assume that a number alone tells you everything about the route.<\/p>

Don’t expect every minibus to stop at a formal bus stop.<\/p>

Don’t carry only large banknotes.<\/p>

Don’t wait until you’ve already passed your destination to tell the driver you want to get off.<\/p>

And don’t be embarrassed to ask.<\/p>

People in La Paz ask drivers:<\/p>

Is Public Transport Difficult for Foreigners?<\/h1>

At first, yes.<\/p>

Not because it’s impossible to use, but because much of the information that locals understand automatically isn’t written down anywhere<\/strong>.<\/p>

We know which corner to stand on.<\/p>

We recognise words on the windshield.<\/p>

We know when to raise our hand.<\/p>

We know what to shout when we want to get off.<\/p>
